Moving High-Poverty Kids To Better Areas….

does not help kids in the long run when it comes to academics says a new study out published at the Education Next Journal. The report does say it did wonders helping kids move to lower-poverty areas though. Some reasons why the performance was so bad is parents moving kids to worse and worse places over time and school choice problems.

The research was done off the Moving to Opportunity program which is used in the Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York City areas. People in the program were given housing vouchers to get out of high-poverty areas.

The second report on this looks at how many people were in the program, how they got into the program, etc….

reports on Chicago Area high school students.

In the data filled report:

47% of high school freshman do not fail a class, while a whopping 12% fail 8+.
16%, the highest percentage of freshman listed get an average 2.0 GPA. The graduation rate though is 72%
35%, the highest percentage of freshman listed are absence 5-9 days. The graduation rate though for this group is only 63%.

It was interesting to see that only missing just 5-9 days of school in your freshman year had such a major impact in high school graduation rates.

2007 ACT Scores Are Out….

and a record amount of students, just over 1.3 million of them took some ACT exam. Also the average score on math, reading, science, and English parts of the exam are slowly creeping up as well.

Preliminary California Standards Test Scores…

are out. The test cover many subjects and are taken at many different grade levels. The test scores show that blacks and Latinos fall behind whites and Asians no matter what wage level you look at.
