Austin Lampros Article (Great Read)….
The New York Times reports on this former teacher that is not happy at all over a student who he thinks should have gotten a failing grade but passed the class.
The student in question is Indira Fernandez who failed to due numerous homework assignment says the teacher and is back for her fifth year. She did not take the final exam, but was able to get two days of tutoring from another math teacher and take the exam which she only got score of 66 on. Special help no other student got. The student did goto the senior prom though says the article.
The article states the principal was worried about the graduation rate drooping to between 50-60%.
The article says in the second semester she took the math class again. She missed 1/3 of her classes, late to class 20 times, turned in half the homework, and failed 11 out of 14 tests and quizzes.
The article does not get into too much detail on her medical condition though which did allow her to get out classes.
I have to agree with the teacher on this. She failed too many exams and quizzes, she failed to the homework he wanted, she failed to go class on time and skipped way too many classes. The parent is at fault and the school is as well. She is not ready for a high school diploma yet, but she now has one.
I will also go so far as to say that the principal at the school needs to be fired. We need accurate high school graduation rates and this does not give us that at all.
