ACT Report On College-Pre Classes…
is out. The report says that only 26% of high school students meet all four benchmarks, while 19% meet none of them.
The report shows that the more subjects in one area such as math the more likely you are ready to meet the college course curriculum and the more likely that you are not going to have to take a remedial class in college.
College readiness drops for subject such as math and English as they get closer to high school graduation.
In what I think is one of the most interesting data points in the report they say that only 57% of students getting A or B in Algebra II can meet a college readiness benchmark. Only 47% can say the same thing in physics.
In another interesting data set they showcasing only Illinois students they show that the higher the quality of the teacher and the level of math completed go hand in hand with meeting a college readiness benchmark.
The ACT wants four years of English. I give you three years of English for all students. To get to four years you have to get rid of the music or art class which I do not want to do.
They want at least three years of math. I give four years of math with three classes being 2 periods in length.
They want three years of social studies. I give you four which includes a econ/finance class in the 12th grade.
They want three years of science. I can only squeeze in two for all students.
I agree that college readiness is going to have improve, but states are going at a snails pace to improve high school graduation standards.
