College Inc. PBS Frontline Show Review….

I watched the show last night and thought it was a solid piece of work. It does want me to see another piece or so looking other aspects of these for-profit colleges vs. the non-profit colleges though. You can easily have a show looking at admissions and recruiting of college students at for-profit vs. non profit schools.

The report showcased the good, the bad, and the ulgy of for-profit colleges.

The good was people going to college and the few people they talked to that said they are happy about the stuff they are learning.

The bad was the high cost of going to these schools and the debt racked up.

The ugly was programs that were not accredited.

I do not think their is a possible good or great for profit college out their, I will say some are much better than others.

After watching it more regulations need to be placed on these colleges. College programs are going to need to be accredited right away so when the graduate the degree at least means something even if the college is low quality.

Being able to take a college class when you want to and not have to tied to a classroom is a good thing, but for many majors that can wind up being done at the non-profit schools as well though. It would probably wind up costing you less in the long run and quality could even be better.

Some college majors need a lot of hands on work. If the for profit school is not going do that, the major should be junked right away.

Cost is really going to have to be looked at. Although for-profit schools are a nice idea, I do think that go against what education should be. The for-profit schools get 25% of the federal financial aid while only having around 10% of the students, the can easily be a reason why cost is so high.

Being able to transfer credits from these for-profit colleges to non-profit is going to have to be looked at as well. This was not looked at in the Frontline piece though.
