The Street Stops Here Documentary Review….

PBS is out this week with another documentary that I liked, this one though was on Bob Hurly Sr.and his St. Anthony Basketball team. It was an enjoyable around 90 minutes long documentary looking at one year of this team and their fight for a perfect season.

Included in the documentary were a couple of famous college coaches like Roy Williams and the Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski and even some very old Kobe Bryant footage from high school. Lots of comments from old players were included which were great to see.

The side parts to this Documentary they did not spend much time on at all was the school and the financial problems they had along with Sister Alan and her medical problems. The school is a catholic school that spends around 8,000 per student to run, but they offer tuition for four grand. They go very little into fund raising aspect for this school, but at the end of the documentary they said the school got a loan to cover school operation costs. They raised almost all of the 1.5 million they needed and the loan was around 130,000. I do feel though it may have been best to just stick with a basketball only theme for the documentary, but it was necessary in order to help with fund-raising for the school.

The school has no real gymnasium and a few trailers to teach some classes.

The coach is a legend though with over 20 state titles in 35 years and one stretch on nine in a row. He is in the NBA hall of fame. In the games they showed many of the lows the team had even though they were blowing out opponents. They really only got in depth a bit with two players on the team which I think was not enough. All the players on the team seem to come from a tough life though. The seniors though on his team over the year had an almost flawless record going onto college which is great.

The coach was tough on the players, but he got even tougher with them as the season went on. I liked the coach. He seems like a great guy.

Old footage of his son Bobby Hurley and other stars on the team were great to see. If you can find this documentary, watch it.
