Two Articles On Tougher Graduation Standards….

One comes from the Cleveland Plain Dealer where a new revision of graduation standards that the Gov. wants is not sitting well with the democrats in the House Education Committee.  Students in the state of Ohio that want to go onto college must pass four years of math and three years of a lab based science class under the plan.  Two years of a foreign language have been dropped from the plan.

The second one comes from the Houston Chronicle where the State Board of Education is ay odds over what classes will count toward the so-called “4-by-4” curriculum that has to be passed.

have an article up on graduation coaches in the state of Georgia. The program that is going to cost 15 million bucks this year will hire one person for each high school in the state to find out eho is at most risk for droppping out of high school and get them to graduate. As of September 25 they have 341 graduation coaches.

are proficient in math which is down from 76% a year ago.  72% of students in the state are porficient in reading which is down from 79%.

They also have up a website where you can view the information school distirct by school district which I liked.

Principal Claudia Dominguez set up  this program at the Elsik High School.  30 male students who are at risk teens are in this program.  They have to show up to a homeroom class each day.  She also has signed them all up for soccer, auto-tech or welding where they must have perfect attendance in other classes and after school stuff.
