Price of Admission: America’s College Debt Crisis CNBC Show Review….

December 22, 2010 By: richard.ginn Category: Uncategorized

This show finally aired last night on CNBC and is fully worth the hour to view. The show is very negative on the student debt while going over various topics throughout the show.

The hour long show included your typical people that have been hurt big time by college debt. One person wound up with a major medical problem killing off his chances to pay down his college debt. A NJ married couple who co-signed college loans had 81 grand in debt, but their 23 year old son is dead. Another married couple with three kids and 250,000 plus in college debt, but have troubles finding work. Only at the end of the show do we get some good news as the NJ couple got the debt reduced down to around 41 grand and the other married couple both found some jobs.

The show at the start got very data dependent to shock you. More college debt than credit card debt and that college debt is going up by 2,853 bucks a second or a yearly total over 80 billion a year. I say the data worked to draw you in to watch the rest of the show.

One other family they do look at is from Michigan. Their students are going to Calvin College with a tuition of 33 grand a year which includes the dorm costs. The college only has around 4,300 students, but they do have that expensive rock wall you can climb as the show showed. In comparison though both Michigan State University and Michigan University that have a massive more population would cost at least 10 grand a year less up front in cash a year.

A section they do get into in for profit colleges and the shady practices that they have which included one female that got a loan she did not want or even asked for so she dropped out of that college. They also get into colleges that are working with other companies in order to manage the amount of loan defaults that they have.

In one other segment they look at the Higher One company and their business with the University of North Dakota and the debit card program they have with the University. I am not a blow out fan of giving these students that kind of freedom with money.

I say that more data is going to have to calculated. Not only do we need to see college loan default data calculated we will need to see loan deferral data calculated more. College debt is only to get worse over time and unless colleges and the federal government do something about it the debt bubble is college loans is going to burst and burst big.
