going to eliminate loans for first-year college students that are eligible to receive Pell grants. 50 students in the fall will be able to get this deal.

2007 NAEP Writing Scores Are Out…

This report looks at scores from the 8th and 12th grade.

They say that North Carolina was the only state to see a decrease in scores, while 18 states saw no change in scores, 19 states saw increases in scores, and 12 states along with the District of Columbia did not have enough data.

If we look at race only, all races either improved or remained the same for 8th and 12th graders since the years of 1998 and 2002.

Black and Hispanic students saw some of the best gains and both races were able to close the gap slightly between the White population.

They included one sample question from, each grade level and two different responses. One good one and one not so good one.

The Urban Institute And CALDER Out With

a new study looking at only high school students who have teachers from the Teach for America Program.

In this study they did limit data from 2000-2001 through the 2005-2006 school years and used teachers from North Carolina teaching classes that had end of course exams.

The researches found that classes taught by Teach for America teachers had more minority students in them.

They also found that the Teach For America Teachers were better than non Teach For America teacher with three years or less experience.

on public universities in the state questioning private universities getting state aid.

The article says that Syracuse University has received 20 million since 1998. This college now has an endowment over 1 billion bucks.

Columbia has gotten over 32 million, but has an endowment over 7 billion bucks.

I could see smaller private colleges getting some money, but colleges with super sized endowments need no state aid though.

that more college students in the state are dropping out of college to go to the work force. The article says that in the past 20 years the USA has dropped from first to tenth place with adults that have college degrees.
