looking at schools in the Hamilton County area of Tennessee. The Benwood Foundation and other groups donated over five million bucks in order to help schools in the area.
The study looks at 8 schools in the end that got full funding.
The biggest thing the school district did was told all the teachers they had to reapply for their jobs. In the first year of the new pay plan only 16 teachers got a bonus of up to five grand. The school district added mentoring for teachers.
The changes helped increase test scores and lower the dropout rate for teachers.

are now going to stop handing out college loans to students.
on Cheektowaga Central Middle School that has put some stiff penalties on students who are not doing well in school. Penalties do include not being able to participate in sports and other after school activities.
