on private loans for college which are growing very rapidly. These loans are not guaranteed by the government and interest rates on these loans can be as much as 19%.
Reasons for the growth in private loans is the limit on the amount you can get from federal loans and agressive marketing from online websites.
The San Francisco Chronicle article does not offer much new in the stats part but looks at more people and how they are trying to deal with the debt that they have.

in Massachusetts has passed new rules for high school graduation. Students will now have to either get higher scores on the math and English portion of the MCAS exams or pass a bunch of college-preparatory classes by their senior year.

now going to offer online classes to make sure students that are at risk of failing high school exit exams. They are calling these classes High School Assessment classes and they already have algebra and American government classes they can take.

that more than half of the schools in the Tempe, Ahwatukee Foothills and Chandler areas have achieved the states highest ranking. The federal government have stats that are much worse than the state says.
